정월대보름 “Jeong-wol Daeboreum” literally translated means the great full moon of the first month of the lunar new year (Lunar Year: January 15th). On the solar calendar 2020 this day falls on February 8^th and it is a day that is celebrated by watching the full moon and dancing around bonfires (bonfire festival on February 8^th 2020 at Namsangol Hanok Village, www.hanokmaeul.or.kr), and cooking and eating seasoned vegetables, nuts, and hearty rice with mixed beans (ogokbap) or jujube (sweet yakbap).

On February 24^th, our chef Nancy will show you how to prepare some of the basic baby vegetable dishes and the ‘Ogokbap’ glutenous rice with mixed grains. Come and see what happens in a typical korean home around on Daeboreum day. This cooking class happens once a month at the Community Center of Banpo 4, 3^rd floor. Reservation made on a first-come and first-served basis. Bring your apron and tupperwares.

Come and learn Korean traditional calligraphy with a calligraphy teacher.

During seven sessions, you will be introduced to different calligraphy styles and proper proportions of writing Hangeul (Korean alphabets).

CULTURAL PROGRAMS

The Minhwa class brings together a group of amateur artists who are inspired about one of the most popular Korean traditional painting methods. You have probably seen them in Korean museums or souvenir shops in Seoul. The strong and acute black lines, the vivid eye-catching colors, Bold and unconventional layouts. You have probably felt the wit, humour, and optimistic spirit, tales of love and scholarship and seen the delicately colored flowers, insects and animals all combined to create the philosophy of art, and the life force itself, of Koreans. Come and try the art of Minhwa at Seorae Global. Animated in French and English.

Hanji literally means “the paper of Korea”. The main material is the fibrous skin from mulberry trees so it is a strong and long lasting material unlike the regular industrial paper. It is used in a variety of ways and has a different name according to its use. If it is glued on a door it is called a window paper, if used to inscribe written information it is called a family registry book. It is used to also make furniture such as a side night stand, a lamp or even a big chestbox.

Join us every Thurdsay morning to discover this Korean traditional medium. You may choose from a variety of objects realizable with Hanji by consulting a catalog on display at the Seorae Global Center. Once you choose your item, we would need at least one week to prepare the starting kit. Material cost is paid in advance prior to the first class. Cash preferred for material fee.

Class time is from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, every Thursday (except on public holiday)

MONTHLY SCHEDULER

Maedup is a traditional Korean handicraft. Knots of diverse colors can be used as belts, jewerly, lace identity tags, and as a decorative element on instruments. You may choose from a variety of objects by consulting a catalog on display at the center. Please note that it is necessary to follow the sequence of classes from the beginning to master the basic skills.

Kids' Art Friday. Every Friday at 16:15 (50 minutes).

Acrylic, watercolor, paper art, collage, assemblage.

Classes are held in French and English.

5000 KRW per session. You can choose the number of sessions.

Maximum 10 places available per session. Registration on a first-come first-served basis.

ZERO WASTE SEORAE

Upcycle by sewing starts again on January 7th 2020 at 9:20am (until noon).

Join this group with an experienced textile designer who is donating her talent and her time to guide you with your simple sewing projects. Remember, this is an upcycling activity, so we welcome anyone with ideas to repurpose used fabrics or clothing. It will be a guided do-it-yourself workshop to create simple garments, bags and accessories and encourage recycling. If you have any used fabric that you would like to give a second life to, please drop in as well.

Examples of what you can do:

- To hem a pair of existing pants

- To adjust the length of a dress

- To make a string bag out of used fabric

- To make accessories out of used fabric

Simple upcycling project At the workshop, you will get to use a sewing machine, receive hands-on sewing tips with all basic sewing materials. Any additional specific material needs for your project is for you to bring (ex: patterns, zipper, decorative strings etc). This is part of the Zero Waste Seorae, a new initiative created by a small group of Seorae residents motivated by the idea of reducing waste in Seorae Maeul.

Space limited to 6. Prior reservation required.

Cost: 5000 KRW per session when Delphine is present. Otherwise free when Delphine is absent for anyone who can work a sewing machine and is independent.

Fees go to replenish sewing material.

HELPFUL INFORMATION

Anyone who had traveled in mainland China or Hong Kong recently and is suspecting infection from the Corona virus is advised to call the center for disease control 1339 first before taking any further actions. The St. Mary's Hospital near Banpo is operating a special care unit to treat patients with symptoms related to the virus. Patients in need of further screening will be directed to visit the special care unit.

Operating hours: M-F 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Please visit the ER outside of these hours.

The Seorae Global Village Center is part of a network of information and welcome centers for foreigners located in neighborhoods across Seoul where many foreign residents tend to reside. The opening of these centers was an initiative of the city of Seoul in 2008 with the mission to provide practical information about living in Korea so that foreign residents find the day-to-day management easy. Our primary role is to answer questions that pertain to daily life and to help manage situations where the language barrier becomes an issue.

You will find at the center Korean language programs as well as other cultural and artistic lessons to learn and appreciate the multiple facts of the Korean culture. We hope that this will help you create new encounters and discoveries.
