Choice Artists 01 JAMBINAI
JAMBINAI plays a surging, dramatic form of metal-infused post-rock using traditional folk instruments. The band has received acclaim for their riveting performances as well as their ambitious recordings, such as 2016's A Hermitage and 2019's ONDA.
JAMBINAI "The Music exists everywhere but belongs no where."
Q1.  How does JAMBINAI preserve the past?

A1. "Local music which has been around for a long time is [an asset only we can have]."
In an essay published on CLASH magazine in 2019, we said, "When we make music, the focus is on the texture and sound image of an instrument's distinctive tone. We want to show the true beauty of traditional instruments. Hence, we deliberately include noise that traditional Korean music attempts to hide, and, sometimes, we partially highlight a technique unique to traditional music (sigimsae, etc) and arrange it in the song." Tradition, among many things, is something that distinguishes us from other artists. But, it is not the only or the most important source of inspiration to our music.
Q2. How does JAMBINAI live in the present?

A2. "We harmonize with people through [the music we do now]."
JAMBINAI makes every effort not to embrace emotions that usually come along with traditional music or produce easy-listening fusion music that arouses curiosity of the public. Instead of destroying or bringing down the glory of traditional music, we are working hard to make music that can be classified as a new genre of traditional music in the future.
Q3. How does JAMBINAI see the future?

A3. "In the future, we want to [be an artist who creates new opportunities]."
Having studied traditional music, we are haunted by insecurities from time to time. However, we have embraced insecurities as it is. Life has offered us with 'a sense of taste and experiences only living persons can have' which we converge into our music along with tradition that we acquired by heart and mind. We aspire to become the artist who can show the world that hard work and dedication to art pays off in the end (no matter how long it takes).

Choice Artists 02 Park Jiha
The music of composer/performer Park Jiha blends classical minimalism and improvised music with traditional Korean instruments like the Piri(double-reed bamboo flute), Saenghwang(bamboo mouth organ), and Yanggeum(hammered dulcimer). Deftly combining the instrumentation and complex expression of traditional Korean music with an array of contemporary forms and sounds, Park Jiha has staked her place in the international music scene over the last few years as the official showcase for The World Music Expo, WOMEX and Classical:NEXT. Trained in Korean traditional music, Park Jiha started her career by founding the duo 숨[su:m], which had a major impact upon the “new Korean music” scene. Her first solo album, Communion(2018, tak:til / Glitterbeat Records), pursued more distant sound traditions and an eclectic instrumental palette. Collaborating with musicians from different genres, the project pursues a form of experimental minimalism that rejects ornamentation in favor of a stark clarity and meticulous balance. Pitchfork said of the album, “Jiha’s gift is in her ability to skirt dull prettiness in favor of exploiting the edges of her instruments, yet not at the expense of tangible, straightforward melodies.” Recently, Park Jiha released her new album titled Philos(2019, tak:til / Glitterbeat Records) and has been performing it both in Korea and abroad.
"Park Jiha displays not only her subtle arranging skill but also the capacity for instrumental music to express as much meaning and emotion as language" -The Guardian(Global album of the month)
Q1How does Park Jiha preserve the past?

A1. "Local music which has been around for a long time is [product of life and time]."
I have never tried to get the past or any cultural elements to fit in my music, I can somehow create things that would have a reflection on a personal past / experience but nothing really intentional, it comes naturally within the creative process. I’ve always focused on working with my personal emotions, translating the accumulation of feelings and thought I have into music. This was also the case for my last album, making it definitely had a huge importance for myself, just glad to bring a small contribution to the immensity of our world.

Q2. How does Park Jiha live in the present?

A2. "I harmonize with people through [sound and emotions]."
Trying to be myself, expressing the best way possible emotions and feelings into music for the past couple of years. Making sure to do it meaningfully, not by obligation.
Q3.  How does Park Jiha see the future?

A3. In the future, I want to [see myself mature with time].
Not having a particularly clear desire for a certain dreamed future just looking forward to accumulate more experiences and live my own story. Trying to stay sincere and passionate
