Showcase Artists 07 Ensemble BARAJI
‘Baraji’, a pure Korean word that means the heartfelt care given to a person with unconditional support, refers to the impromptu sound of the accompanists that makes a harmony with the main melodic line in the context of traditional music. The character of baraji has been epitomized in Jindo ssitgim gut (shaman ritual for dead spirits), creating a unique style of music.
They strive to identify traditional musical elements among vocal, percussion, instrumental and theatrical music for interacting with contemporary audiences. By polishing and reconstructing these elements, they hope to contribute to making the world more humane through the music of baraji.
Baraji "Novel Renaissance: The New Comes out of the Old"
Q1. How does Ensemble BARAJI preserve the past?

A1. "Ensemble BARAJI accepts the long-established local music as a [native language]."
Local music is like a native language to us. Just as the our starting point was Jindo, Jeolla-do, we were born and raised there and naturally learned music. We think we naturally make music based on it without trying to preserve the past. The message shares sympathetic stories with modern people and the method of playing instruments and singing is based on the traditional method. Ensemble BARAJI is composed of only traditional instruments and traditional sounds, so it is called 'traditional creation' rather than just the word 'creation', so we seem to be seen as a team that preserves the past well. The traditional creative form is also the direction we pursue.
Q2. How does Music Ensemble BARAJI live in the present?

A2. "Ensemble BARAJI communicates with people through [baraji]."
'baraji' is pure Korean, which means taking care of someone with all our heart, and in traditional music, it means the impromptu sound of accompanists added to the main sound of leading the board. Taking up the overall part of baraji music is to praying for people or praying for the dead to go to a good place. As the meaning of the noun ‘baraji’ itself, we take care of everyone who shares our music. The message that Ensemble Baraji wants to convey is best contained in the song 'Beasohn' belonged to the first album.

<The following are some of the lyrics of 'Beasohn'.>
I wish that I could be the one who doesn't seek only your own wealth even if living a life is hard,
who takes care of your neighbors, especially those who are suffering from starvation, sick, or abandoned,
and who doesn’t hurt others with harsh words but embraces them warmly.
Q3. How does the Ensemble BARAJI look to the future?

A3. "Ensemble BARAJI wants to look like [our present state] in the future."
In the past, we lived in the past, in the present, we live in the present and in the future, we will live in the future. This means that every time is 'present' for us. We don't want to limit the past, present and future. Just because we're doing traditional music, we're not doing 'music of the past'. The music we are doing, the message we are want to deliver, is the present. We are currently doing music that we like and can do best in the direction we can, and we think we will release music according to our emotions over time. There may be musical changes depending on the time, but maybe, we don't think we will change our 'baraji' mind to take care of people.

Showcase Artists 08 Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE]
TALE is a group of creative artists that crosses over many different kinds of music genres. And it is a Korean Classic Ensemble composed of composers, Korean traditional instruments performers and Western instruments performers, playing as one ‘Music’, not as a ‘Fusion’.   They perform various music such as folk songs, classic, tango, pop songs and others, with a touch of traditional and classical korean feelings. ensembles that accumulated over the years and colorful music programs convey sympathy and emotion to audiences.
Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE] "Gugak X Classic X Jazz, They perform various music such as folk songs, classic, tango, pop songs and etc., with a touch of traditional and classical korean feelings.
Q1How does Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE] preserve the past?

A1. Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE] accepts the long-established local music as a [our essence].
Music is art beyond time and space. The music of the past is played in the present, and it comes to be alive again. We think local music, which has come down to date in various ways, is not 'stagnant' in the past, but similar to essence 'me' that has naturally taken root in our lives. Rather than "what language does local music have or what elements does local music bring?" We think TALE's past is naturally contained in each bowl of 'I' that has lived on this world so far. This is because the influence of things like my parents who made me exist and their parents, and others are melted inside me. I believe each of these bowls will be gathered to create a new type of music, which will also be future's local music.
Q2.How does Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE] live in the present?

A2. "Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE] communicates with people through [music]."
I think 'music' is a common reply that most artists will answer. Just as we can tell the story of 10 years in only 5 minutes of music, the medium 'music' is invisible, but it is more direct and moves people's minds than any expression. Like we create music and artists who perform music and audiences who listen to artists' music meet and complete the music, the messages we deliver and eyes, breathing and air in that moment and everything, including those earlier allows us to share and empathize.
Q3. How does the Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE] look to the future?

A3. "Korean Classic Ensemble [TALE] wants to look like a [person who has an unchanging attitude] in the future."
We hope we will be less hungry and relaxed than we are now after time. However, we hope that we will not be complacent in such a life, but still have worries and anguish about music, and desire for the audience. We hope that many people listen to and sympathize with TALE's music and we really want that our music is regarded as communicating with and comforting them. In addition, we hope that we will be established artists who can be a role model for young musicians who play Gugak, classical music, and jazz and so on.
