Greetings from Director Hong-ghi Choi

Long-wanted promising future after COVID-19 appears to be challenged by the influence of several man-made, climate and economic crises. Challenges after challenges we have been facing before and after COVID-19 seem to consistently test human-beings capacity to overcome. Despite these numerous hindrances threatening us, the international community should be at the front line of protecting the value of sustainable development goals and achieving them even for vulnerable lives around the globe more than ever.

In line with this global commitment, UNITAR CIFAL Jeju is most committed to providing timely and quality capacity building training programs targeted at local actors mainly in the Asia Pacific region. In the third quarter of this year alone, we provided the beneficiaries with a learning opportunity in thematic areas such as disaster risk reduction and resilience, measures to address human trafficking, sustainable consumption and production, sustainable and inclusive urbanization, climate risks on the peace and human rights. We will continue to develop and provide resourceful and innovative training programs in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the coming months.

UNITAR CIFAL Jeju and RSO of the Bali Process co-organized an intensive training program on “Measures to Address Human Trafficking: the 3P Paradigm” on August 2, 4, 9, and 11, which invited representatives mainly from the governmental sector along with NGOs and International Organizations.
The event was composed of four online sessions and each session explored how to address human trafficking through an in-depth study of the 3P framework: Protection, Prevention, and Prosecution, along with how anti-trafficking policies and strategies can be designed and implemented. According to the experts invited to the event, it is more important to well implement the identification of victims as well as the referral for protecting and assisting victims either in human trafficking or smuggling rather than differentiate the two criminal activities: Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants.
"The workshop enabled all participants to deeply understand how to protect and prevent people from human trafficking."

JEJU FORUM SESSION - Climate Change and Sustainable Peace: Implications and Ways Forward

The JEJU FORUM session provided a timely discussion platform for searching for implications and future possible roadmaps concerning the era of ever-enhanced climate risk threatening peace. Therefore, the alternative perspective of the nexus of climate - human rights - conflict relations and what the United Nations does were the key agendas for the session. The experts on the floor from UNEP, UNHCR, Stockholm Peace Research Institute and Jeonbuk National University pinpointed that peace needs a new definition. This is due to the inevitable fact that climate change, human rights, peace, and security are all interrelated. At the end of the event, the agreed view was drawn: a new perception of peacebuilding is needed, including climate action and development. In this session, over 70 local and international public joined the lively discussion and shared their idea.
