연구실이 진행하는 연구에서 가장 중요하게 생각하는 것은 무엇인가요?
교수 답변 - 사람들에게 실질적인 가치과 임팩트를 주는 연구를 하기 위해 노력합니다. 저희 연구의 주 결과물인 인터랙티브 시스템의 학문적 가치를 검증하고 이를 실제 사용자가 쓸 수 있는 수준까지 끌어올리는 과정을 거칩니다. 연구자 개인의 생각이나 선호보다는 실제 시스템을 만들고 돌려보고 사용자를 관찰하고 데이터를 분석하는 과정에서 얻는 실질적인 경험과 근거에서 나오는 통찰을 중시합니다.
- 사람들이 실제로 겪고 있고, 도메인 내에서 가장 중요하면서도 어려운 문제를 찾기 위해 노력합니다. 우리가 현재의 능력으로 풀 수 없는 문제에 대해서는 비전을 줄이기보다 분야, 기관, 국가에 상관 없이 우리의 부족한 부분을 채워줄 수 있는 외부 연구진과의 협력을 통해 힘을 합쳐 해결하고자 합니다.

- Quality over quantity (though it would be nice to have both), supportive and inclusive environment, not being afraid to speak up and participate in an active discussion.
- In research, our lab strongly values keeping our "ears close to the ground". That can be closely listening to actual users and their struggles, keeping up-to-date with happenings in our community and the world, or being aware of and testing new technologies. During the pandemic, we experimented with diverse types of conferencing tools to see what each one did well.
- 자발적인 참여도를 가장 중요하게 여기는 것 같아요. 학부생 인턴일지라도 교수님이나 석,박사 선배님께서 주제를 정해주고 다음 task를 주는 형식이 아닌, 본인이 흥미를 느껴 연구주제를 선택하고, 함께 방향을 고민하며, 그만큼 책임감도 따르는 것 같습니다.

연구실에는 몇 명의 학생이 있고, 학생들의 백그라운드와 역할이 어떻게 나눠지고 있나요?
교수 답변
- 현재 연구실 인원은 30명 정도입니다. 2명의 박사후 연구원, 7명의 박사과정, 5명의 석사과정 학생과 더불어 연구원, 방문학생, 학부생 인턴이 함께 연구하고 있습니다. 학문적, 문화적 배경과 구성원 개개인의 경험이나 관심사, 전문성 측면에서 다양성이 풍부한 환경을 추구하고 있습니다.
- 학생의 출신 학교, 학과와 성적보다는 어떤 경험을 통해 어떤 문제를 풀고 싶은지, 왜 그 문제를 풀고 싶은지, 왜 HCI로 그 문제를 풀고자 하는지에 대한 방향이 분명한 학생과 함께 일하고자 합니다.
- 학부생에게 의미 있는 연구 경험을 제공하기 위한 인턴십을 활발히 운영하고 있습니다. 방학마다 전세계 학부생을 대상으로 공개 인턴십 모집을 하고 5:1에서 10:1의 경쟁률을 뚫은 학생들이 대학원생과 짝을 이루어 연구에 적극적으로 참여하고 논문을 함께 씁니다.

- We have diverse backgrounds, both culturally and academically. People in the lab have undergraduate degrees in educational science, chemistry, mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science, and graduate degrees in economics, management science, statistics, databases, culture technology, and machine learning. This helps us find in-house experts in various domains when we need help in our research and maintain a dynamic lab culture.
- Although most of the lab members are Korean, we also have current and past members from other cultural backgrounds: from Indonesia, Republic of Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, India, China, Philippines, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. We are constantly looking to bring in people with different perspectives.
- Our lab strongly values diversity, whether that be it cultural or professional backgrounds. Regarding diverse culture, there were times in the lab were conversations in five different languages will happen spontaneously (English, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, and German).
- The graduate students are in charge of leading their own research, while the interns are typically given research topics, but are encouraged to create their own solutions.

- Flexibility. Lab members have the flexibility to change how they work (i.e., working schedules or location) but also on what they work on (i.e., research topics). Lab members are encouraged to explore their interests widely and pursue diverse research topics.
- 자원은 널려있고 도움을 요청하면 도움을 줄 수 있는 사람들이 많아서 잘 주워다 쓰면 정말 개인적으로 많이 성장할 수 있다. 자유도가 높음!
- 무한제공되는 커피머신이 연구실에 있어 언제나 좋은 커피향이 풍깁니다! :) 또한, 영어를 사용하고 수평적인 분위기다 보니 사수님, 교수님과 같은 딱딱한 칭호보다 서로 이름을 불러주는 문화가 좋은 것 같아요. 자꾸 자랑이 길어지는 것 같지만 교수님이 학생들을 생각해 구비해 주신 스탠딩 책상, 허먼밀러 의자, 휴식 등 다목적 방 등의 복지도 빼놓을 수 없습니다.
