Weekly News
Cyber-attacks are an everyday thing in 2022 - it's no longer hard to find yet another news article about another industry data leak, or even an affected government program. State actors in particular are clearly stepping up their game: cyber warfare brins less risk to their own people, and is often a lot cheaper than 'conventional' warfare. Unfortunately, this has gradually seeped into the naval domain as well. A small software bug infecting your radar or guns, or the loss of confidential data can have a devastating effect during a mission. A brand-new Naval Safety Framework, based on extensive risk analysis in the naval field, is now ready to assist navies worldwide in more easily and cost efficiently implementing cyber defence measures on their navy ships!
The Port of Corpus Christi has become the first port in the state to obtain the Texas Cyberstar Certification, issued by the Texas Department of Information Resources(DIR). The Cyberstar Certificate Program was launched in May by the Texas DIR to recognize public and private organizations in the state that voluntarily meet specific criteria for cybersecurity best practices. An organization must meet several criteria to obtain a texas Cyberstar Certificate, including: adopt a cybersecurity risk management program; privide appropriate training and information for employees; maintain consistency with National Institute of Standards and Technology standards for cybersecurity; incorporate public service announcements to encourage cybersecurity awareness; and coordinate with local and state governmental entities.
It's not a question of if, but rather when the commercial shipping industry will face an operational technology(OT) cyber attack that risks seafarers' safety and severely disrupts global supply chains. The threat level and sophistication of hackers is increasing every day and many ship owners do not fully appreciate the seriousness of the OT cyber threats they face. While this data incorporates all sectors, the UK Government's recent National Strategy for Maritime Security recognized increasing cyber espionage, cyber crime, hacktivism and ransomware attacks as major threats to shipping's "physical assets"(OT) and the US-led Global Counterterrorism Forum echoes these concerns.
